Which YouTube thumbnail size should you download?
YouTube generates several stills from the custom thumbnail you upload (or from auto-generated frames). maxresdefault.jpg is 1280×720 when the uploader provided a high-resolution custom thumbnail. If that file 404s, fall back to sddefault (640×480) or hqdefault (480×360). Older videos and some Shorts never receive a true max-res file.
For design work, always start with the largest file that loads. Upscaling a 480px still in Photoshop will never match a native 1280px asset. For documentation and slide decks, HQ is usually enough and lighter to email.

Save ten thumbnails from videos that rank for your target query. Lay them out at mobile size. You will immediately see patterns: face scale, text word count, background contrast, and whether the subject sits left or right. That board is more honest than copying a YouTuber whose audience is nothing like yours.

Rights, fair use, and what not to do
A public CDN URL is not a license. Custom thumbnails are typically copyrighted artwork. Download for personal study, fair-use commentary, or assets you already own. If you run an agency, keep a folder of your channel’s historical thumbnails so you can rebuild brand kits after a designer leaves.

- If maxres is missing, the creator likely uploaded a smaller file — use sddefault.
- Shorts stills are often 9:16 crops of a 16:9 master. Check composition before you copy the layout.
- Name files as {channel}-{topic}-{date}.jpg so research folders stay searchable.
